Westlaw Asia Tip - Finding historical and future versions of UK legislation at the section level

Last Published: May 30, 2022

This tip provides guidance on how to view historical and future versions of UK legislation at section level.

  1. Begin by locating the Act using the legislation search template. In the UK legislation search template, type the name of the act in the Act/ SI Title field then click search to run the search. e.g. Companies Act 2006.

  1. Click the Arrangement of Act link to view the arrangement of the Companies Act 2006.

  1. Scrolling down the arrangement of act, you can see status icons next to every section of the Act. Let us take s. 156 as an example. The green status icon indicates this section is currently in force, while the yellow exclamation mark icon indicates that this section is pending amendments. Click s. 156 to view the currently in force version of this section.

  1. To view the previous version, click the single back arrow next to “(version 2 of 3)”.

The single back arrow will bring you to version 1 of 3 of this section, which was in force from October 1, 2008 to March 11 2015 and has been superseded.

  1. To view the future version (prospective law which has been passed by the Parliament but not come into force yet), click the single front arrow.

The single front arrow will take you to the prospective version of this section, of which the enforcement date is to be appointed.
